At Fulwood and Cadley Primary School, we believe that music provides every child with opportunities to be creative, expressive and confident while developing an appreciation and enjoyment of music.
Our music curriculum is ambitious for all pupils and is designed to progressively develop children's knowledge, skills and understanding through listening, singing, performing, composing and musicianship.
We want children to experience a broad range of musical styles, traditions and cultures and develop the confidence to participate in music both individually and collaboratively.
How We Teach Music
Our music curriculum is supported by Charanga, which provides a structured and progressive approach to music teaching and learning.
Music is carefully sequenced so that children regularly revisit and build upon previous learning. Key musical knowledge, vocabulary and concepts are explicitly taught and developed as children progress through school.
Children have regular opportunities to listen and respond to music, sing, play instruments, improvise, compose and perform. Learning is practical and participatory, enabling children to experience musical concepts rather than simply learning about them.
Listening and Responding
Children listen to and explore a wide range of music from different periods, traditions, cultures and genres.
They are encouraged to listen carefully, identify musical features, express their responses and develop an increasingly sophisticated musical vocabulary.
Through listening, children also develop their understanding and appreciation of the diversity of music and the important role it plays within different communities and cultures.
Performing and Composing
Performance is an important part of our music curriculum.
Children develop their voices and have opportunities to play a range of instruments, individually and as part of a group. They learn to listen to others, maintain their own part and perform with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
Children are also encouraged to become musical creators. Through improvisation and composition, they experiment with sound, explore musical ideas and make decisions about how music can be organised and developed.
As children progress through school, they take increasing ownership of their compositions and performances and are encouraged to evaluate and refine their work.
Developing Confident Musicians
We want every child to see themselves as capable of participating in and enjoying music.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop confidence, creativity, collaboration and self-expression. Children are encouraged to take musical risks, perform to others and celebrate their own achievements and those of their peers.
Through our music curriculum, we aim for children to leave Fulwood and Cadley with a love and appreciation of music, a secure foundation of musical knowledge and skills and the confidence to continue participating in musical experiences in the future.
