KS1 - Years 1 & 2
Key Stage 1 and 2
Year 1 and Year 2 make up Key Stage One, and Years 3 to 6 are Key Stage Two.
Like all schools in England, we must follow the National Curriculum 2014 – it sets out subjects and content which we must teach. Within this, however, there is flexibility so that we can interpret and plan to meet the needs and interests of our children now and for the future. Our curriculum is a creative curriculum, enhanced and enriched by our values and school drivers:
Key stage 1 and 2 Curriculum
The key subjects covered are:
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Physical Education (PE)
- Primary Modern Languages (PML) this is currently French and is taught in Key Stage 2
- Religious Education (RE)
- Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship (PSHCE)
Children are taught the National Curriculum at their own ability level. Teachers plan carefully to ensure continuity and progression for all children.
Careful consideration is also given to ensuring that the curriculum is and relevant to the children. For this reason, subjects are usually grouped together under a topic or theme. The basic skills taught in literacy and numeracy are also promoted through other areas of the curriculum. We also recognise the importance of enriching the curriculum, so offer special curriculum events and activities, such as sports days, a wide range of extra curricular activities, visiting speakers, visits, class assemblies, school music, drama productions and outdoor activities, as well as links to local high schools and specialist teachers.
