Outdoor Learning

Our intent for outdoor learning is to create a rich, engaging environment where all children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We aim to use our outdoor spaces—including the polytunnel, raised beds, and school animals—as meaningful extensions of the classroom, where learning is brought to life through hands-on, real-world experiences that are carefully linked to the curriculum.

Through outdoor learning, children will deepen their understanding of subjects such as science, mathematics, and literacy by exploring, growing, observing, and caring for living things. The polytunnel and raised beds provide opportunities to investigate plant life cycles, sustainability, and healthy living, while also applying key skills such as measuring, recording, and problem-solving. Our school animals further enrich this experience by fostering responsibility, empathy, and an understanding of the natural world.

Equally important is our commitment to supporting children’s emotional and mental health. Outdoor learning offers a calm, nurturing space where children can build confidence, develop resilience, and regulate their emotions. Interaction with nature and animals provides therapeutic benefits, helping to reduce anxiety, improve wellbeing, and create a sense of belonging.

By integrating curriculum learning with wellbeing-focused experiences, we strive to ensure that every child feels supported, inspired, and motivated to learn—developing not only as successful learners, but as happy, healthy individuals.
